Challenging natural play in central London

From its foundation in 2011, the West London Free School has been at the forefront of education, both locally and nationally. The school has a distinct and very clear ethos, which is to provide a classical liberal education for pupils of all backgrounds.

The Headteacher of the school approached us in February 2017 as the school had identified a need for a climbing structure for both their KS1 and KS2 students. Utilising an existing expanse of tarmac, the brief was to introduce challenge and appropriate risk and to enable children to develop core and upper body strength.

We carefully considered the schools brief and their preference for bespoke natural play when designing the structure. Our final design featured a series of raised platforms installed at different heights, offering challenge for a range of ages and enabling children to access the structure according to their own abilities and confidence. Linking the platforms together with slung nets, ropewalks and balance beams, we created a structure that dips up and down, winding and twisting to form natural routes and provide open-ended play opportunities. A slide and fireman’s pole offer more traditional play themes and exciting exit routes to this natural play setting. The play area was finished with a rubber mulch safety surface in a natural forest green colour.
